Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden will have its historic buildings upgraded and a new 5-year strategic plan is being drafted for the first time in many years. Among items to be improved are the roof replacement and stabilization of the Hugo Reid Adobe (aka Baldwin Adobe), the rehabilitation of the library, as well as roof replacements for the 126-year-old Queen Anne Cottage of "Fantasy Island" fame, and the Coach Barn. Mitchell Bishop, curator of the historic collections, said he plans to rehabilitate Baldwin Lake.

Arcadia 16-year-old Roger A. Lewis, who was struck by a car while bicycling, has died. The accident occurred over the weekend at Santa Anita Avenue and Duarte Road. The driver who struck Lewis was driving a 2008 Chrysler Sebring. Lewis was a former student at Arcadia High School.

63. Lucky Baldwin's 'Arcadia': establishes sporting city on Santa Anita Ranch in defiance of strenuous opposition. New York Times, June 23, 1903. Arcadia is incorporated, and it promises to be the "sportiest" place in the country, despite opposition from the State Anti-Saloon League. The town is located on Baldwin's ranch of 18,000 acres.
