On February 27, 1979, James Hooper, an Arcadia mailman, entered an Arcadia residence through a window when he heard moaning inside. An elderly woman, living alone, had fallen and broken her hip. On February 26, 1981, Hooper again heard moaning sounds at the same residence and entered to find the same woman had again fallen. She was taken to the hospital.

The Arcadia High School Apache Marching Band won the Sweepstakes Award at the annual state championship All-Western Band Review for the third consecutive year which earns them the perpetual trophy. This makes the third time they have won the perpetual trophy which goes to a school that has won the Sweepstakes Award three times in a row. This is a "first" in the All-Western Band Review.

A federal judge overturned several charges in the case of Arcadia man George Torres, 52, accused of running his Numero Uno grocery store chain in Los Angeles like an organized crime ring. He had been convicted of racketeering charges, solicitation of murder and multiple tax and fraud charges when prosecutors came forward with new evidence that appeared to exonerate him on the more serious charges. Torres was released from federal custody after being held without bail for two years.
