A shooting occurred at the corner of First Avenue and Fano Street, a block from the Santa Anita County Golf Course, at about 10:20 pm Saturday, June 24, 2006. A boy, whose name was withheld, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Japanese had a long local history, dating back to workers on the Santa Anita Ranch, and local residents had the uncomfortable feeling of seeing friends behind the wire at the track.

Obituary/death notice. Radio personality and singer Veeva "Suzy" Hamblen has died at the age of 101, in Santa Clarita, California. She and husband Stuart Hamblen (died 1989), also a radio entertainer, had a ranch in Arcadia for many years and were known as some of the leading trainers at Santa Anita Race Track in the late 1940s. Stuart and Veeva rode their Peruvian Paso horses in the Rose Parade from 1979 to 1989. Veeva was also famous as a gospel songwriter.

Obituary/death notice. In Loving Memory of Jean Irwin Lewis, Aug. 21, 1914 - Nov. 7, 2006. Jean was born in El Monte, California. She was the school nurse at Rosemead High School for 26 years. After retirement in 1976, Jean enjoyed traveling and her second home in Mexico. She has been active with the Arcadia Senior Friendship Club and the Arcadia Presbyterian Church. Jean always had a zest for living and enjoyed new experiences. Her husband, Jim Lewis, and daughter, Sally Lash, survive her. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation or the Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, Covina, in her name.
