The family of John Chan, the 44-year-old Arcadian who was killed by Lisa Welchert in a drunk driving traffic accident, filed a claim against the City because they feel the police officers left Welchert apparently passed out in her car and returned to their patrol cars, allowing her to escape from the police in her automobile.

One found dead in apartment fire on Genoa Street near First Avenue on Sunday, April 7. Arcadia police Lieutenant Kollin Cieadlo said there were no signs of foul play so far. Charlie Tuggle, a battalion chief with Arcadia Fire Department estimated damages to the structure at $10,000 and $1,000 to the contents. Arcadia fire Captain Drew Pryor said the call came in at 9:18 P.M. and the bathroom of the apartment was on fire. By 9:37 P.M. the fire was out. The dead man's identity has not been released.

All three women were accosted by an African American man in his 20's or 30's wearing a black cap. They were accosted in the early morning with a gun while alone in their cars.

He faces another attempted murder charge for allegedly shooting his 73-year-old mother in the chest. In the wake of a fight in January between Asian American and white teenagers near Arcadia High School, police, parents and school officials have come up with a new get-tough policy to crack down on students involved in violence or drugs. Called PAXCE 2000, for "Peaceful Arcadia Through Community Efforts 2000," the program puts a police officer at the High School and three junior high schools.
