The ordinance decreases the number of permitted commercial haulers in the city to 3. Arcadia City Councill will look at possible changes in the city code on floor area ratio (FAR), lot coverage, and design review for single-family homes. FAR refers to the combined floor area of buildings on a lot, compared to the size of the lot. Arcadia has a lot coverage rule that single-story homes can cover 45% of the lot and 2-story dwellings 35%. Arcadia currently has a citizen-run design review effort within homeowner associations in northern parts of Arcadia, but no citywide system.

A fire on July 4th in Alhambra, believed to have been caused by illegal fireworks, destroyed Southland Display, a business that supplied posters and promotional materials to Hollywood movie studios. Arcadia Fire Department and other surrounding area fire departments helped to put out the blaze.

Arcadia mail-in voters reject proposal for new lighting assessment districts. Under the proposal, the single-family homes on well-lit streets would pay up for $24 a year. Those with "sporadic" lighting would pay up to $10.12 a year, while homes on streets without lights would pay nothing. The current lighting assessment districts expire in 2010. Out of 14,600 ballots sent out, about 1/3 were returned. The proposal failed by 70 votes. 2,457 ballots voted yes and 2,530 voted no.

A USDA rule change went into effect Thursday requiring California to change the way meat and poultry packaging is weighed. It requires inspectors to use a dry tare form of testing in which all fluids within a package must be credited as part of its content. Tare is the weight of packaging and all materials, tags, clips, stickers, absorbent soakers. Consumers could be paying more for less meat at the market.

Arcadia city officials have adopted a voluntary water conservation program that aims to reduce annual water consumption by 10 percent. Currently there is a state wide drought and a local water supply shortage. Metropolitan Water District (MWD) has voted to raise water rates 14 percent in July 2009. The other two main sources of the city's water are the Main San Gabriel Basin and Raymond Basin.
