Jerry Collins Picnic Pavilion dedication ceremony will be held July 19, 2016 at Wilderness Park at 2240 N. Highland Oaks Drive in Arcadia. There is a memorial plaque to commemorate his life. This report given by Du's attorney failed to address how or why Du failed to stop after other cars had stopped at the crosswalk, which is required by California Vehicle Code.

Paddock guard John Shear, a hero who was injured saving a girl from a runaway horse, has returned to work at Santa Anita Park. He turns 91 years old next month. He is a 5 foot tall, 110 pound Sierra Madre resident and sustained a fractured pelvis, internal bleeding and other injuries when he had a head-on collision with horse "Sea and Sage" on March 12, 2011.

2011 Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) scores show a majority of area schools are progressing. California's STAR program assesses public school students' knowledge of the math, English and science in grades 2 through 11. Retail chain Anchor Blue, which began nearly four decades ago, with two Miller's Outpost locations in Ontario and Pomona, will close all of its 117 stores, including those in Arcadia, Industry, Pico Rivera, Montebello and West Covina. Its parent company, Anchor Blue Holding Corporation filed for bankruptcy protection on January 11, for the second time in two years. Miller's Outpost began in Ontario in 1948, when brothers Dave and Lou Miller founded Ontario War Surplus, which became Miller's Surplus. The brothers split, and Dave opened the first Miller's Outpost locations in 1972.

An overnight break-in occurred at Burlington Coat Factory in Arcadia, at 1201 S. Baldwin Avenue. Employee found a jewelry display case had been smashed open. Arcadia police searched the store but no suspect was found. It was not clear what, if anything, had been stolen, other than the jewelry from the case.

Last week's fake bomb threat at Arcadia High School by a 14-year-old student, who was arrested, caused a lockdown of almost 4,000 students and personnel for several hours. This had a great impact on the school. Thousands of dollars of hot lunches were wasted, additional revenue was lost when all school activities in the afternoon and evening had to be canceled, and overtime had to be paid to maintenance workers.

Arcadia firefighter Michael Herdman, who went missing and was found dead on June 27 at the bottom of a cliff in Los Padres National Forest, had drugs in his system when he died. Ventura County Medical Examiner toxicology report said he had alcohol, Ecstasy, and Adderall in his body.

Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is banned from Santa Anita Park after his fourth horse of the meet dies. The horse American Currency sustained an injury to his left front ankle and had to be euthanized. This is the 30th horse fatality since December 26, 2018.

Secrecy by school districts blasted. Board of Education members Mike Spencer of West Covina Unified and Ramon Miramontes of Pasadena Unified each called for more transparency from their staffs on the issue of teacher misconduct. Pasadena Star News sent Public Records Act requests to 28 school districts in San Gabriel Valley requesting information on teacher misconduct. While two districts--Arcadia Unified School District and Bonita Unified--have now released information, 26 others have cited employee privacy concerns as a reason to keep their records private.
