The tile mosaic "Blind Justice" created by artist Jay Rivkin in 1958 on the entrance to the police station will be demolished this month as a result of the opening of the new police station. The mosaic could not be saved.

The fountain at Peacock Corner (southwest corner Santa Anita Avenue and Huntington Drive) is taking on a new look. Student volunteers are placing small mosaic tiles on the facade of the fountain. Local interior designer Shirley Farris volunteered to coordinate the project.

A tile tapestry was unveiled on the northwest wall of the Arcadia Public Library on Friday, April 8, 2005. More than 200 individual tiles were painted by the public to depict life in Arcadia. A photo is included.

"Blind Justice," an 11-foot tall tile mural at the police station dating back to the 1950s, will not be preserved when the new police station is built. The mural was judged not to have significant artistic or historical merit. The mural will be archived, with some element maintained for display in the new building.

Lightning, the Division 5 girls team from the Arcadia-Sierra Madre area, won the TriSection State Championship by beating Paso Robles 5 to 2. The team, composed of 8 and 9 year olds, had a record of 31-0-1 and is the 4th team from the area to win the state championship in 27 years.

The United States Department of Justice made a formal apology in a letter to 27-year-old Joshua Connole for arresting him after sport utility vehicles (SUV) were vandalized at dealerships in West Covina, Monrovia, Duarte, and Arcadia. He is now no longer a suspect and lives in Oregon.

Arcadia City Council has gone on record as supporting the building of a new city hall that would be built on the other side of the Civic Center property. Out of three options presented by city manager Bill Kelly, the council consensus was for a new building at a cost of $6.6 million and adjacent to Huntington Drive West.

City Manager Bill Kelly outlined a $16 million program to finish all public building projects for Arcadia in three years, as part of the city's five-year capital budget. The spending would include a new $6.5 million City Hall, a $1.3 million upgrade to Fire Station 106 on Baldwin Avenue. The city plans to build a new fire station to replace Fire Station 105 on Santa Anita Avenue. A city gym for the civic center property is in planning stages. The city plans to re-roof the community center for $150,000 and to put up 1/2 of the $800,000 cost to make the high school sports field an all-weather facility.
