Dick Hale, a Bradbury councilman and CEO of development firm Hale Corporation, is proposing a four-story medical office building on the southern portion of the Santa Anita Park race track parking lot. It would be a joint venture with the race track's owner, The Stronach Group. It would create probably 300 jobs. An application has not been submitted but Arcadia City Council is set to discuss the developer's concept at a 6:00 PM study session on September 25 at City Hall.

Arcadia City Council gave preliminary approval for a proposed $18.5 million, four-story medical office building to be constructed near Methodist Hospital on about 4 acres of Santa Anita Park's expansive southern parking lot. Dick Hale's development firm Hale Corporation, has a joint venture with Santa Anita Park's owner The Stronach Group, to use part of the race track's under-used property at 289 W. Huntington Drive for the roughly 70,000 s.f. building.

Santa Anita Park owner Frank Stronach is coming to town this weekend to meet with local horsemen to talk about the state of the sport. He'll also meet with an engineer to discuss the pros and cons of a proposed new racing surface consisting of dirt, sand, and a small amount of fiber. He says it is a very safe surface. The question remains, who will foot the bill for it, since Stronach's Magna Entertainment Corporation (MEC) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year.

Santa Anita Park owner Frank Stronach met with about a dozen horse trainers to discuss the track's racing surface. Stronach announced that he would not replace the synthetic Pro-Ride track yet, but will stick with it until he gets the ability to run the track with less state regulations. He wants free enterprise, which he may never get. In the meantime, drainage problems and injuries persist on the synthetic track. Stronach said he'd be back in April to discuss the issue more.

Construction of the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension bridge, that will span the 210 Freeway, has begun. Preparation of the giant column supports included drilling over 100 feet into the ground. The 584-foot Gold Line bridge will take shape by December. It replaces an old railroad bridge across the freeway, which was built about 1969 and torn down in 1997, said Gary Baker, director of construction for the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority. The bridge's design has been controversial, as some say it is not representative of the origins of the area. The entire bridge is slated to be finished summer 2012.

Gas prices in America are reaching record highs. A Gallup poll this month found 85% of U.S. adults believe President Obama and Congress "should take immediate actions to try to control the rising price of gas." Mike Siroub, who has operated Union Oil Station in Arcadia for 25 years, said customers who used to fill up just put in $10 or $20 at a time, telling him they can't afford to fill up and that they are driving less or using more fuel-efficient cars. Retail chain Anchor Blue, which began nearly four decades ago, with two Miller's Outpost locations in Ontario and Pomona, will close all of its 117 stores, including those in Arcadia, Industry, Pico Rivera, Montebello and West Covina. Its parent company, Anchor Blue Holding Corporation filed for bankruptcy protection on January 11, for the second time in two years. Miller's Outpost began in Ontario in 1948, when brothers Dave and Lou Miller founded Ontario War Surplus, which became Miller's Surplus. The brothers split, and Dave opened the first Miller's Outpost locations in 1972.

Arcadia resident in the 700 block of Camino Grove Avenue finds the body of a stranger in his swimming pool. The dead man is 35-year old Greg Tser-Ming Chen of Arcadia. Foul play was not initially suspected in the death. Chen's dog, a golden retriever, which was not on a leash, was found in the backyard too. Chen leaves behind a wife Maggie, who is pregnant with the couple's second child, and a toddler-aged son. See also Pasadena Star News, p. A3, August 9, 2013.
