9-year-old Maria Lugo came to Arcadia Arcadia Methodist Hospital from Mexico to have a steel plate removed from her chin. It was a follow-up surgery to a softball-size tumor removal she had in April, 2008, at Arcadia Methodist Hospital. Dr. Jon Tyrell, a member of LIGA International, and Dr. B.S. Chandrasekhar operated on her. LIGA International is a non-profit group of medical experts, pilots and volunteers who travel to clinics in Sinaloa, Mexico several times a year.

Senior citizens competed in the Senior Olympics powerlifting event held at the home gym of Arcadia personal trainer Harry Sneider as part of the California Senior Games Championships. The highlight of the games was seeing 89-year-old Eugene Mailin lift 140 pounds, winning gold in his weight division. Other participants named were 53-year-old Val Olotoa and 75-year-old Ernie Smith. Legendary competitor Beatrice Maullin died two weeks before the games began.

The Pamplemousse, which means "the grapefruit" in French, is a fast colt. Ridden by veteran jockey Alex Solis, The Pamplemousse won the 1-1/8 mile $200,000 Grade III Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Park yesterday. His time 1:47.86 was the fastest in the Sham's 9-year history.

Obituary/death notice. In Loving Memory of Jean Irwin Lewis, Aug. 21, 1914 - Nov. 7, 2006. Jean was born in El Monte, California. She was the school nurse at Rosemead High School for 26 years. After retirement in 1976, Jean enjoyed traveling and her second home in Mexico. She has been active with the Arcadia Senior Friendship Club and the Arcadia Presbyterian Church. Jean always had a zest for living and enjoyed new experiences. Her husband, Jim Lewis, and daughter, Sally Lash, survive her. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation or the Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, Covina, in her name.

Results of the new state test called the CAT-6 (California Achievement Test), which replaces the old SAT-9 test, show that around 70% of the students at each grade level in the Arcadia schools are in the national norm of 50th percentile in reading, and half or more of these students tested at or above the 75th percentile. Lee was a graduate of Throop Institute, which became California Institute of Technology. Her mother was Delia Chandler.
