North view of house at 180 West Huntington Drive, Arcadia, located just north of the municipal athletic field adjacent to Arcadia City Hall, Arcadia Police Station tower is in the background . It was part of the Le Meridien hotel land but is being sold Salvation Army and moving to Pasadena. In the year 2000 this was the location of Oakcrest Adult Rehabilitation Center. In this photo, its downstairs windows are boarded up. See document "State Wars on Bookies." A house at 180 West Huntington Drive in Arcadia was raided and four men were arrested who were using binoculars to catch the race results and flashing them to bookmakers throughout the nation. Los Angeles Times, January 17, 1938.

Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin in buggy hitched to a dark horse. Baldwin is figure on left. Seated next to him is W. McClelland who was Baldwin's horse trainer at this time. Standing beside buggy is an unidentified young man. Other mounted horsemen, black as well as white, are shown on track. This was taken at Baldwin's training track which was adjacent to present Michillinda near Colorado Boulevard. Etched on photo is: "E.J. Baldwin and J. McClelland on the track - Santa Anieta." (Anieta is misspelled and should be Anita.)

Eight civic minded men armed with shovels have apparently just installed sign reading: Give the Boys a Lift. This would have been during World War II when thousands of Army personnel were stationed in Arcadia and the sign designed to encourage residents to give the soldiers rides into Pasadena or other locations.

View probably is looking east across Santa Anita toward large barn that must have been on southeast corner. Owner Emil Bolz is pictured standing in front of his station. He not only sold auto products but ice cream, tobaccos, cold drinks, etc. The address listed in 1928 City Directory is 2 W. Foothill.
