Another view of "Smoot Hole" before cleaning up and just before subdividing for El Rancho Village. The name Smoot Hole came from aborted effort of Joe Smoot and Anita Baldwin to get race track built in about this location.

In foreground is a rustic shelter built to house bell which came from San Gabriel Mission under peculiar circumstances (and that was in later years returned to Mission by Anita Baldwin). Stone house at 58 W. Grandview. Small girl in foreground possibly Dextra Baldwin. Anita Baldwin purchased 22 acres of her father's land for $10.00 on March 8, 1892. (see Arcadia VF-Baldwin, Anita) Anita's father built stone cottage in May 1902 on lot 7 and part of lots 8&9 in block 98 of Santa Anita Tract. (This information came from Mrs. Sharlene Cartier, who owned the house in 1973.)
