The history of the peafowl from Indian and Java that live in Arcadia is presented. Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin imported three pairs from India in the 1880s. His daughter Anita Baldwin added some birds from Java. The peacock is official bird of Arcadia, is protected, and should not be fed. See also VF "Peacocks" for copy of article.

The City will pay $25,000 of city money toward putting a 10-foot tall bronze peacock at Peacock Corner, in front of Arcadia County Park, on the corner of Huntington Drive and Santa Anita Avenue. The sculpture will emerge from the center of the fountain at the corner. The actual cost of the sculpture and base is $36,500. The fountain was originally donated by Rotary Club 35 years ago.

Arcadia County Park fountain rededicated. The fountain in the park, which is a memorial to wartime casualties, was rededicated to honor those who perished in last year's September 11th terrorist attack. The fountain is being redone and will have a bronze peacock on the top of the fountain. The renovated landmark will be called Peacock Corner.

An 8-foot tall bronze tribute to Arcadia's official bird, the peacock, will be unveiled August 5, as part of the city's centennial celebration. The statue will be located in the fountain at Peacock Corner, in the front of Arcadia County Park, at the southwest corner of Huntington Drive and Santa Anita Avenue. The sculptor of the peacock is Dave Chapple and the sculpture cost $30,000.

City council members refute charges that they met in private with a developer and property owner. Arcadia councilman Bob Harbicht said council did not meet in closed sessions, but met only with city staff to discuss land located in the parking lot of Santa Anita Park. The Council has never met privately with Caruso Affiliated or Magna Entertainment.

The Arcadia Redevelopment Agency is apparently making some progress in a project to improve the area around the Rusnak Mercedes-Benz dealership. The project, known as the Morlan Place Center, has been the topic of closed-door discussions with property owners around the Huntington Drive site. The city has extended offers to at least two property owners to move to 620 E. Live Oak, so that Morlan Place Center can be developed.
