Arcadia High students have fond memories of dead teacher. Ken Aberle, 42, died on June 2 at the City of Hope after a nine-month battle with leukemia. About 150 students gave blood at Arcadia Methodist Hospital.

Area librarians agree that recessionary periods create a greater demand for library services. It is ironic that this comes at a time when libraries are hurting from budget cuts. Arcadia and Monrovia have suffered most in this regard, cutting down on personnel and new book purchases and, in Arcadia's case, closing it's audio-visual department and reducing hours.

Vatar Kilbashian, of Huntington Jewelers, and his family have vanished. They left, supposedly on vacation, stating their intention to return on January 5. They did not return. A half million dollars in jewelry in missing. Kilbashian also left behind thousands of dollars in bad checks.

An international businessman was abducted from his Arcadia home and later released the same evening after his abductors demanded he pay them $1 million. He was told that he would be contacted the next day with instructions about where to put the money, but no money has been paid. This is the first kidnapping of this type in Arcadia, although there have been four other kidnappings in the San Gabriel Valley since last October.
