Enormous cut backs, reduced operating hours, and admission fees are all being contemplated as solutions to keeping the Arboretum going in the face of Proposition 13 caused revenue losses.
Area law enforcement officials will meet in Arcadia with the California Department of Fish and Game representatives to discuss wildlife, especially bears, coming down into the populated foothill cities.
After using the name "Arboretum of Los Angeles" for 55 years, the Arboretum has been given permission to use the name Los Angeles County Botanic Garden. Hopefully the new name will increase attendance.
Fish and Game officials met in Arcadia with members of area police to discuss dealing with increasingly visible wild animals, especially bears, who amble into cities bordering Angeles National Forest. Wildfires may drive animals from the mountains.
Article discusses severe budget and staff cuts at the Arboretum. Since 1975 the staff has been cut by 40 percent. The most recent county budget cut another $250,000 from the department.
The Atlantic Richfield Company has contributed $25,000 to the Arboretum to ensure resumption of several programs cut with the passage of Proposition 13.

A 300-pound bear was seen rummaging through a trash can in Wilderness Park, and authorities feel it may be the same bear that was captured in the same place 10 months ago, then released 50 miles away in Angeles National Forest near Pyramid Lake.

The Les Brown Band of Renown will perform at the annual Picnic Concert at the Arboretum. Brown is back by popular demand due to the overwhelming success of last year's concert.
