Monrovia man Gerardo Cortez, 26, was arrested for allegedly making telephone threats to shoot adults and children with an assault rifle at schools (including Arcadia High School), the Westfield Santa Anita mall, and a hospital in the San Gabriel Valley last week. He was booked at Monrovia Police Department for five counts of felony Making Criminal Threats and five counts of False Report of an Emergency. He is to be arraigned today. Tranquility of Arcadia disrupted by barricaded gunman. Arcadia Police officer and two civilians wounded when police responded to a domestic violence call in the 2500 block of Greenfield Avenue in Arcadia. The suspect Nurhan Venk, 47, allegedly shot the Arcadia police officer in the face, allegedly shot his 73-year-old mother Ankine Venk. A stray bullet hit an 83-year-old man across the street.

Man arrested after shooting in Arcadia. A 47-year-old man was arrested Wednesday, August 10, for shooting and injuring an Arcadia police officer (shot in the jaw), the suspect's 73-year-old mother (shot in the chest) and the neighbor across the street (shot in the eye with stray bullet). All three are stable and expected to survive. The shooting and standoff happened at 2500 block of Greenfield Avenue due to a family dispute. The 26-year-old Arcadia officer has been with Arcadia Police Department for 6 months and has 3 years of previous law enforcement experience.

Sierra Madre officials had hoped Arcadia could help through a contract between the cities where one Arcadia officer would help patrol areas of Sierra Madre at night and backup would be available as needed. Dorothy Denne, longtime Arcadia humorist, "Mother of the Force" honored by Arcadia Police Foundation at the Arcadia Police Foundation's Halloween Hoopla. Arcadia Mayor April Verlato and her husband attended. For 20 years, Dorothy wrote a weekly column called "Dorothy's Place" in Arcadia Weekly. She was a teacher for her career and has been a volunteer at the Arcadia Police Department. In 2015 she spearheaded the effort to bring back the K-9 program.
