Shoemaker Al Yarter standing out in front of shops he built on North First Ave. The family lived in the house between the two shops. Mr. Yarter's grandson, Pat Carlin, told us in 1980 that Mr. Yarter bought the land from Anita Baldwin for a stated price. Later, he was told by an agent, that because the lot was within the lighting district, he would need to pay an additional amount. When Mr. Yarter spoke directly to Anita Baldwin about this, she said it had been her mistake and he would pay only what had been agreed upon. Grass-sheathed homes of Indians on Rancho. Patron Reid Greer identifies this hill as just above east parking area. He points out that the tree showing in photo #628 is same as large one in flat area. Sandy Snider at Arboretum read in early newspaper that Baldwin found on the property when he bought it, "an old adobe house and Indians living in native-made homes." This photograph belongs to the Huntington Library. It is shown here for research only.

Original description, "Balloon about 30 feet off ground. Balloon has round target-like mark on its side. Under balloon is truck with winch and many men participating in restraining it. Overcast day." Revised description 9/7/2017 by Mark Rosenblum, a local Balloon School historian, identifies it as Rockwell Field in San Diego. It is not Arcadia, but he said the men from the Balloon School at Ross Field in Arcadia, went to San Diego to join in on a public display of the balloons.

Standard Oil drilling rig set up near Daines Dr. at Live Oak Park. Standard was given permission to drill in summer of 1970. Drilling went on for several months and when the well proved dry, the rig was dismantled (this probably is in Temple City).

Group of 30 students and one teacher standing by the "little red schoolhouse." It was on corner of California and Santa Anita Avenue and had been converted out of a vacant saloon. It was pressed into service when students outgrew new building that opened in 1907. We believe African-American boy in second row is Julian Fisher.

Baseball player, possibly Johnny Lindell, talking to a crowd of about 23 boys at an Arcadia Recreation Department event on a baseball field. Johnny Lindell grew up in Arcadia in the 1930s, went to Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte High School and USC, before being signed by the Yankees. He was both a pitcher and outfielder, and played several years in the 1950s for the Hollywood Stars of the Pacific Coast League.

View south across lawn (with fountain in right foreground) toward 2 storied home of Erik Amalienborg or Prince Eric, brother of King of Denmark. He built this home in late 1920s at 2607 S. Santa Anita Ave. and went into business raising chickens. Building is now on grounds of Arcadia Congregational Church and is still (as of 1980) much as it is pictured here; it is used by the church for various purposes.
