Four wheel drive truck with Cunningham winch used to get balloon aloft and back down and to keep them anchored. One truck for each balloon and had 1500 meters of heavy cable. Tires of truck were solid rubber. Note: ground line coming from truck near winch. This was to take care of static electricity generated along cable due to telephone in balloon. View west of bungalow with chimney on east side. In 1939 City Directory, this was called Ivy Cottage Restaurant, at 22 E. Foothill. In 1931-32 City Directory, listed as Gansers Ltd. - Preserves. This was the first time this address showed in the city directory, so building apparently dates to 1930. Last business to use it was the Copy Cat custom dress design shop.
Gene Glasco, City Clerk 2012-2024. Retired in 2024. This photo c. 2020. Gene Glasco is a native Californian and long time resident of Arcadia. Gene attended Highland Oaks Elementary school, First Avenue Junior High School, and is a graduate of Arcadia High School where he lettered in Football and played second chair trombone in the award-winning AHS Marching Band. Gene is Arcadia’s first elected City Clerk that is a graduate of Arcadia High School.
Gene served six years in the United States Navy. He spent fourteen months in Vietnam as a Radioman in support of US Navy riverboat activities in the Mekong Delta and is a service-connected disabled Veteran. Gene is an Honor Role graduate of Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo. He attended San Jose State University where he majored in Public Relations with a minor in Asian American History. After thirty years in the foodservice industry, Gene retired from Glasco and Associates, Inc. He also has practiced real estate in Arcadia.

The offices here closed on April 4, 2014 and this building was demolished on July 7, 2014. The school district offices moved to a new location at 150 S. 3rd Avenue on April 4, 2014 and then opened to the public on April 14, 2014.

Small Spanish-style home. Address, at the time of the photo (1927) was 2747 Olive Street in Temple City. Numbers on Olive Street were changed and same house in 1980 has street number of 10159. This was girlhood home of Vera Van Houten and her family. The children went all the way through Arcadia schools as this home was in Arcadia School District.
Thatched conical shaped roadside fruit stand with the name SLEMONS' ORANGE WIGWAM,ARCADIA,CALIF. According to 1930 City Directory, it was located at 141 E. Foothill Boulevard. (McDonalds address in 1993 is 143 E. Foothill.) Owner was James B. Slemons. Two people can be seen standing near entrance.

Arcadia Chamber of Commerce's distinctive round building is visible in the background. People are sitting on chairs and standing on the grass.
Standard Oil drilling rig set up near Daines Dr. at Live Oak Park. Standard was given permission to drill in summer of 1970. Drilling went on for several months and when the well proved dry, the rig was dismantled (this probably is in Temple City).
Senior citizens and children playing shuffleboard in back of the Arcadia Community Center. The shuffleboard area is gone now. The Museum Education Center, built in 2014, is using that space now.
