141. Due to the drought in Mexico, red jalapeno peppers needed to make Huy Fong Foods' sriracha sauce are in short supply. Though Ray Goei of Arcadia says he isn't worried because he still has a big bottle at home, he may find an empty shelf or a hefty price increase when he tries to get more. A 9-ounce bottle of Huy Fong's chili sauce, normally $2.49 is now offered on Ebay for $18.89 and $34.50 from a third-party seller on Walmart.com. The Arcadia Business Association has requested a moratorium on beauty and nail shop in the downtown business district. There are reportedly 16 salons downtown and another 8 more on First Avenue south of California.
The changing face of Arcadia--commercial brokerage firm NAI submits proposal for downtown districts. The City of Arcadia hired NAI to assess the city's five business districts and make recommendations to improve them and bring in appropriate, compatible businesses. Arcadia City Council approves $70,000 to help the Downtown Business Association set up a business-improvement district. The district would tax commercial property owners to revitalize the area.
An extensive survey by a Los Angeles based real estate consulting firm rated the cost of doing business in a number of California cities, including Arcadia.
View north toward mountains and at rear of building at 22 E. Foothill Blvd., which was apparently built c. 1930. It was used for a fruit preserve business, family restaurant, and real estate office. It's last occupant was the Copy Cat custom dress business.
Threatened with a law suit, Arcadia may relax an ordinance governing adult business, clearing the way for an all-nude striptease club proposed for an industrial area.
In a split vote, City Council approved an ordinance that effectively doubles business license fees bringing Arcadia to roughly the mid-point in fees charged by other Los Angeles County cities.
A convenience shopping center has been approved by the Arcadia Redevelopment Agency for the southeast corner of Huntington Drive and Santa Anita Avenue. The businesses now occupying the land (a Texaco station, Burrito Flats restaurant, Miller's Carpet Care and Drive-Through Liquor) will have to be removed.
