John Shear, a 90-year-old paddock guard at Santa Anita Park, has been hospitalized for putting himself between a 6-year-old girl and a charging race horse called See and Sage. The girl was not hurt but Shear had several broken bones.

In a strongly worded letter to Canadian mogul Frank Stronach, Arcadia city officials urged Santa Anita Park's owner to work with developer Rick Caruso and finish the proposed upscale Shops at Santa Anita mall project that has been in the works for the last five years. Stronach's MI Developments (MID) voided its contract with Caruso following bankruptcy restructuring at Santa Anita Park. In a further flexing of city muscle, the letter stated that it "looks forward to working with the race track in future projects that require City approval."

George Haines, the interim president of Santa Anita Park since Ron Charles resigned, will soon be named president. He takes the reins at a time of uncertainty and change at the track and in the horse racing industry. Some of the issues and challenges that Haines will face are discussed. Haines is 55 years old and started working for Santa Anita Park in 1972.

Santa Anita meet opens: no fans but record betting. Santa Anita park began its 84th winter-spring meet yesterday with no audience, but had a record-breaking opening day in betting handle, as $23,003,159 was wagered on the 11-race card. The old record of $20,491,016 was set in 2018. First-year General Manager Nate Newby hopes fans will be allowed back soon. Until such time only essential personnel and horses' owners are allowed to attend races.
