A 90-foot crane used for a movie shoot at the Arboretum toppled arm-first into Baldwin lake, which is being used as the set for the upcoming Columbia Pictures movie "Anaconda."

One of the houses on the north cove of the lake at the Arboretum which was built for the filming of the movie "Road to Singapore," starring Bing Crosby, Dorothy Lamour, and Bob Hope. The house is up on stilts in the lake. The movie was filmed in 1940.
The jungle area of the Arboretum is being restored with a $250,000 grant. The jungle has been badly damaged due to heavy use and a fire. It is being restored as a prehistoric jungle garden.
The fountain created by Millard Sheets which sits at the entrance to the Los Angeles County Arboretum may be removed and replaced by another water feature. The plan is in the early stages and the final decision will be make by the Arboretum Foundation Board of Trustees.
A new office building is being constructed on the corner of Huntington and Indiana. It will occupy the site of the old service station run for man years by William Stockman, but which has been closed for some time.
Drive-in movie fundraiser, a tribute to former addict and prison inmage, actor Danny Trejo, to help drug treatment organization CRI-Help. Features Universal Studio's award-winning documentary "Inmate #1: the rise of Danny Trejo" on a 50-foot screen at Santa Anita Park on May 14. The film chronicles Trejo's journey from addiction to Hollywood stardom. He will appear and his restaurant Trejo's Tacos will cater the event.
Enormous cut backs, reduced operating hours, and admission fees are all being contemplated as solutions to keeping the Arboretum going in the face of Proposition 13 caused revenue losses.
The Trask Boy Scout Camp in the San Gabriel Mountains has a new multi-purpose building, thanks in part to the Arcadia Rotary Club. The building is named after Arcadia resident Nick Pokrajac.
All-Area Baseball. Pasadena Star News names Mike Ebner of Maranatha High School, as Player of the Year. All-Area team consists of four from Arcadia: Pitcher Ian Hoffstetter, Infielders Danny Chavez, Alex Dolan, and Jack Esguerra.
Atlantic Richfield Corporation has contributed $50,000 toward the building of the planned Hall of Environmental Education at the Arboretum. The contribution is in addition to a recent $25,000 ARCO grant to support ongoing programs.
The possibility of a fee for admission to both the Arboretum and Descanso Gardens is being considered by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. At a hearing, Hal Roach, a member of the Board of Governors expressed the hope that the Supervisors would not resort to charging a fee. The fee would NOT be used to keep up the Arboretum, but would go into the County General Fund.
After using the name "Arboretum of Los Angeles" for 55 years, the Arboretum has been given permission to use the name Los Angeles County Botanic Garden. Hopefully the new name will increase attendance.
Los Angeles County is having second thoughts about the newly changed name for the Arboretum. The official name is Los Angeles County Botanic Gardens and Arboretum, but now LA County will seek the feedback of interested residents and organizations to decide on the official name.
