Shoemaker Al Yarter standing out in front of shops he built on North First Ave. The family lived in the house between the two shops. Mr. Yarter's grandson, Pat Carlin, told us in 1980 that Mr. Yarter bought the land from Anita Baldwin for a stated price. Later, he was told by an agent, that because the lot was within the lighting district, he would need to pay an additional amount. When Mr. Yarter spoke directly to Anita Baldwin about this, she said it had been her mistake and he would pay only what had been agreed upon. 20-year-old man Jason Scott Gustin found guilty of attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend in Arcadia. On August 22, 2016, according to testimony at trial, Gustin met near Arcadia and sat in his car to talk when he pulled out a knife and slashed her throat and then began strangling her. As the victim tried to escape, he stabbed her multiple times. She ran away to a nearby convalescent home. He was arrested a short time later after he showed up at his mother’s workplace in Arcadia.

Obituary/death notice. In Loving Memory of Jean Irwin Lewis, Aug. 21, 1914 - Nov. 7, 2006. Jean was born in El Monte, California. She was the school nurse at Rosemead High School for 26 years. After retirement in 1976, Jean enjoyed traveling and her second home in Mexico. She has been active with the Arcadia Senior Friendship Club and the Arcadia Presbyterian Church. Jean always had a zest for living and enjoyed new experiences. Her husband, Jim Lewis, and daughter, Sally Lash, survive her. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation or the Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, Covina, in her name.

Dorothy Denne, longtime Arcadia humorist, "Mother of the Force" honored by Arcadia Police Foundation at the Arcadia Police Foundation's Halloween Hoopla. Arcadia Mayor April Verlato and her husband attended. For 20 years, Dorothy wrote a weekly column called "Dorothy's Place" in Arcadia Weekly. She was a teacher for her career and has been a volunteer at the Arcadia Police Department. In 2015 she spearheaded the effort to bring back the K-9 program.
