The USC Arcadia Hospital helds its Crystal Ball fundraiser on October 7 to honor cardiologist Dr. Heiner Vogelbach for his 40 years of dedication to USC Arcadia Hospital (formerly Methodist Hospital). The entertainment was by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Some of Vogelbach's career information is included.

Monterey Park shooting aftermath. Lunar New Year is typically a festive and family affair, but was marred by a mass shooting in Monterey Park, which killed 10 at a dance hall. David Lee, co-president of Arcadia Chinese Association, said Lunar New Year is supposed to be "a happy time for family reunions because Chinese tradition and culture is very family-oriented."

Man, 52, gets two life sentences for killing his nephews in Arcadia. Deyun Shi will spend the rest of his life in prison without a chance for parole for killing 15-year-old Anthony Lin and 16-year-old William Lin in their Arcadia home on the 400 block of Fairview Avenue, and for attacking his now-former wife Amy Lin, at the couple's La Canada Flintridge residence.

More than 30 years later, USC professor pays off debt. Real estate broker David Hyun and his former student at USC Marshall School of Business, Frank Gangi, president of Gangi Development, are having Peking duck together, which Hyun promised his business students if they made $1 million within 5 years of graduation. Frank Gangi was in Hyun's real estate development class in 1984. Hyun is an Arcadia resident, architect, and real estate broker.

Chen Suen becomes first Asian American fire chief in Arcadia. He takes over from Barry Spriggs who retired November 8, after 29 years of service. Suen is an Arcadia resident. He emigrated from Taiwan. He graduated from Arcadia High School, and attended Loyola Law School, UC Irvine, and Santa Ana College, before spending the last 18 years with Arcadia Fire Department.

Murder trial. Deyun Shi, man accused of revenge on family. The prosecutor said Shi, a Chinese citizen, had plan to flee to Hong Kong after killing his 2 teenage nephews in Arcadia and an attack against his wife. Shi faces life in prison without parole if convicted in the January 22, 2016 killings of 15-year-old Anthony Lin and 16-year-old William Lin, and of injuring his wife the day before. The boys were bludgeoned to death in their home in the 400 block of Fairview Avenue in Arcadia.

Manley has been with Arcadia Police Department for 6 months and worked for Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department before that. He has 3 years of law enforcement experience.

Monterey Park mass shooting one year later. City still lives in massacre's shadow. Permanent memorial to the 11 victims is still in planning stages. In Arcadia, doughnut business owners Francois Ung and his wife Shally Ung remember and honor their friend Andy Kao, a victim of the shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio on January 21, 2023, with a pledge that they will send proceeds from sales at their Arcadia Donuts store on January 20 and 21 to the Monterey Park Hope and Resiliency Center and the Andy Kao Memorial Ballroom Dance Group to assist funding the nonprofit organizations. Mailbag topic-George "The Iceman" Woolf was a Canadian jockey famous for riding the great Seabiscuit to victories in 1938. The 35-year-old was unseated from his horse Please Me during a race on January 3, 1946, suffered a concussion and died the next day. He was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale. Gene Autry sane at his funeral.
