Luella Ball's life was saved by a dog named Spitz who woke Ball after a fire broke out in her home. Ball has been providing a temporary home for Spitz who is available for adoption.

Sierra Madre hero John Shear was honored during opening weekend at Santa Anita Park. On March 12, 2011, the then 90-year-old British native John Shear saved a young girl's life at the track when a horse bolted in her direction.

An Arcadia woman's life was saved when her neighbor's carbon monoxide alarm went off. Neighbors alerted authorities who then broke into her apartment to find her unconscious. She was rushed to the hospital and is now in good condition.

Two more horses die after injuries at Santa Anita Park. Jockey Joe Bravo was hospitalized after a tumble on horse Decorated My Life. Decorated My Life and Merit Song are the names of the horses euthanized. Six animals in all have been euthanized this year at the racetrack where twelve died last year. Santa Anita Park officials have said they've made major improvements in horse safety after 2019, when forty-two horses died at the track.
