City of Sierra Madre police must find another way to deal with officer shortage after Arcadia balks at sharing officer. Santa Anita Park will reduce its work force by merging departments. More than 100 full-time and seasonal positions will be affected--including some layoffs and some full-time positions becoming part-time positions, said Greg Avioli, CEO and President of Stronach Entertainment, the track's parent company. The shift to off-track betting and account wagering has brought less revenue to the race track.

Holy Angels Elementary School was closed yesterday because its head pastor, Reverend Michael Evans, has a sister named Teresa Evans, who is a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) sergeant, named by suspected killer Christopher Dorner (ex-LAPD), in his 11,000 word manifesto posted on Facebook last week. Dorner is suspected in the shooting deaths of three people--Monica Quan, daughter of Dorner's attorney during his review hearing, Quan's fiance, and a Riverside police officer. Dorner was terminated from LAPD and is believed to be on a killing rampage. Holy Angels School hopes to open tomorrow or Thursday. See also Arcadia Weekly, February 14, 2013.

Inglewood's Hollywood Park racing history going to auction. The track recently closed for good, but the 75-year-old Southern California landmark is having a 2-day auction of miscellaneous surplus equipment. "All of the good merchandise--the good furniture, paintings, memorabilia--has been moved to Santa Anita Park and to other racetracks, and what they have here is the dregs," said Tijuana-based antique dealer Antonio Vibrillo.

Arcadia Mayor Peter Amundson's selection of Reverend H. B. London, Jr. to speak at the community breakfast on March 4, is drawing criticism from some residents and gay-rights activists. London is a vice president of ministry outreach at Focus on the Family, a conservative Christian group that opposes gay marriage. Some residents are asking Mayor Amundson to reconsider and they feel Focus on the Family delivers hateful messages. The city estimates it will pay between $5000 and $5500 for its contribution to the event, which will include the speaker's plane fare.
