Floretta Lauber was Arcadia's first mayor in 1976, Phyllis Tomkins was the first woman Rotarian in 1987. Ruth Gilb was first president of the Arcadia Tournament of Roses Association in 1983. Beth Decoteau (now Beth Fournier) was first female firefighter in 2003. Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone was first woman to win a Breeders' Cup race. Louise Brandsma was the first female patrol officer in 1978 and first woman sergeant in 1983 in Arcadia Police Department. Catherine Murphy is a retired City Treasurer and WASP (Women's Air Force Service Pilot). Marie Schmitt is one of the city's first woman physicians.
