Rowing on the lake in a boat named CLARA are Clara Baldwin Stocker (second from right), Lucky Baldwin's elder daughter; Clara's fourth husband, Harold Stocker (rowing); and several friends. A copy of this photo appears in the March 2, 1909 Los Angeles Daily Times pt.II p.8 with the following identification: FAMILY GROUP ON THE LAKE AT SANTA ANITA. Left to right, in boat - Mr. Mathews, Mrs. F.D. Black, Mr. Stocker ("Lucky's son-in-law), Mrs. H.C. Wyatt, in white; Mrs. Stocker (Lucky's daughter) and Mrs. Scott. There are seven people seated in the boat, but only six names are identified in the newspaper article. Article is in Arcadia History file Baldwin, Elias J. Handwritten note along bottom of the photo reads "Oaks Barbecue May 14 1915." The "Oaks" was the name for Clara's home.

Shoemaker Al Yarter standing out in front of shops he built on North First Ave. The family lived in the house between the two shops. Mr. Yarter's grandson, Pat Carlin, told us in 1980 that Mr. Yarter bought the land from Anita Baldwin for a stated price. Later, he was told by an agent, that because the lot was within the lighting district, he would need to pay an additional amount. When Mr. Yarter spoke directly to Anita Baldwin about this, she said it had been her mistake and he would pay only what had been agreed upon. Groceries on the left and Arcadia Shoe Shop on the right.

This is home built by Aloyosius Mauch for his family at their ranch at Palm Avenue and Holly Avenue in Arcadia. The first structure put up was a garage which son Henry lived in beginning in 1922 when family bought land. House was completed a few years later. Aloyosius was grandfather of Sgt. Richard Mauch of the Arcadia Police Dept.

The man at the wheel of the fire truck is Jim Nellis. The Councilmen are: Rear seats,L-R: Ferd E. Gram; Arthur N. Multer; and Charles Hawk. Front seat,L-R: Samuel L. Wheeler; John T. Joyce, the Hupmobile Dealer. Fifth member of Council, John Granville was not present. Seated at the base of the pillar of City Hall is Adrian Winkler and standing beside him is George Newton. The vehicles are on their way to dedication of new concrete span over Santa Anita Wash.

Aerial view west toward Santa Anita Ave. from above First Avenue, site of new grammar school. Long driveway heads to Jaspar N. Teague home in center of 10 acre orange grove. (Address in City Directory for this name is 1380 S. Santa Anita.) House to left and south was that of Charles W. Stewart in another 10 acre plot. Both ranches are now occupied by First Avenue Junior High School.

View north on First Avenue just north of Santa Fe Railroad Tracks. Graves Drug Store on right with a bank next to it. The two story building on SW corner of St. Joseph Street and First was McCoy Building. According to information given by Stu Henderson, current owner of King Pharmacy, the history of Graves Drug Store is as follows: Originally it was opened by Oscar Seaquist, later bought by Walter A. Graves. Some years later it was bought by R.B. and R.B. Bagnall Jr. (circa 1940's) and was relocated to 54 E. Huntington Drive. By 1950 the City directory listed it as owned by A.P.King and has been known by that name since.

Bob Merget, on left, and helper Torval Yates pictured in front of Merget's Malt Shop located at 111 E. Huntington Drive, where Bank of America was located until its move to N. Santa Anita. It was a tradition on May Day that free cones were given out to all youngsters, according to information given by former residents.
