Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin on left and Richard F. Carman Sr., one of America's early horsemen. Photo was taken probably about 1907 and printed in newspaper of March 1937 at the time of Carman's death. Carman's horses won four races and placed second in two others on opening day of Baldwin's Santa Anita Race Track.

House at 180 West Huntington Drive, Arcadia, located just north of the municipal athletic field adjacent to Arcadia City Hall. It was part of the Le Meridien hotel land but is being sold Salvation Army and moving to Pasadena. In the year 2000 this was the location of Oakcrest Adult Rehabilitation Center. In this photo, notice its house numbers in disrepair. See document "State Wars on Bookies." A house at 180 West Huntington Drive in Arcadia was raided and four men were arrested who were using binoculars to catch the race results and flashing them to bookmakers throughout the nation. Los Angeles Times, January 17, 1938.

On his lap is his daughter, whom Vesta Tucker Reeves and her sister did not like so they scratched over her photo with a pin. Girl seen over his left shoulder, is Vesta Tucker. The lady next to her is not identified. The girl with the long necklace sitting on the lap of the unidentified lady near Mr. Ryan, is Dextra Baldwin. Small boy on left on Japanese man's lap, is Baldwin M. Baldwin. The man, three figures away from camera in row Dextra is in, is her grandfather, Elias J."Lucky" Baldwin. Large man in light suit just to right of Mr. Ryan, is Mr. Johnson, who owned Johnson's Inn. Seen on extreme right, man with mustache and white hair, is Blas Cuellar, the wine maker.

This photograph was published in the Arcadia Tribune, August 20, 1956 with the caption: Here comes mama--By all indications from this picture, it looks as if the children weren't the only ones who were having a good time at the recent Arcadia Recreation Department city-wide track meet. The Tribune camera caught Mrs. Mary Turner as she broke the tape in the "feature" race of the afternoon. Running a close second in the event is Mrs. John Panatier followed across the finish line by Mrs. Lucas.

Standing at right is Mr. Mann, who owned the Monrovia Ice Co. and it is believed to be his truck standing near him. Next person to the left is believed to be Fred Knisley. Under the sign reading Brunswick tires and tubes on the left, is a group of five. Man with hat and cigarette is Mr. McLean. Man on extreme left is his helper. Looking SW from mountains north of Arcadia. Major tree-lined street running from mountains south is Santa Anita Avenue. Southernmost tree-lined street cutting across entire middle of photo is Duarte Road. Barracks at the Balloon School can be seen just below Huntington Drive. Notice that Huntington Drive stops just west of the Balloon School, at the Baldwin Ranch. Much of Foothill area was planted to citrus.
