Approximately 8 horsemen apparently involved in a roping competition. There are grand stands in the background. Back of card indicates this was on the Old Lucky Baldwin track in what is now Arcadia County Park. (Club House had burned)
Clara Baldwin photographed in one of those cut outs often found at amusement parks early in the twentieth century. There apparently had been another person in the photo, but this person has been cut completely out of photo.
Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin on left and Richard F. Carman Sr., one of America's early horsemen. Photo was taken probably about 1907 and printed in newspaper of March 1937 at the time of Carman's death. Carman's horses won four races and placed second in two others on opening day of Baldwin's Santa Anita Race Track.
Grass-sheathed homes of Indians on Rancho. Patron Reid Greer identifies this hill as just above east parking area. He points out that the tree showing in photo #628 is same as large one in flat area. Sandy Snider at Arboretum read in early newspaper that Baldwin found on the property when he bought it, "an old adobe house and Indians living in native-made homes." Looking north toward San Gabriel Mountains at devastating Monrovia Peak fire on first night. It was to eventually burn more than 13,000 acres and be out of control for five days.
