End of an era--Colonial Pharmacy in Arcadia succumbs to a difficult economy. Arcadia's oldest pharmacy, Colonial Pharmacy, which has been serving the community since 1939, will be closing. Owner Mark Burstyn (photo) has worked there since October 1990.

A team of designers and builders (photo) from Kiewit Parsons firm working on the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension prepare to remove the existing railroad bridge on Colorado Boulevard between San Antonio Road and Santa Anita Avenue in Arcadia. That section of Colorado Boulevard may close today. The portion of Colorado Boulevard west of North Santa Anita Avenue, is scheduled to be closed from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM weekdays through June 8, to remove the existing railroad bridge. Since the Colorado Boulevard bridge was once an old freight line bridge, it is not wide enough to accommodate light rail trains and tracks, and thus, will be demolished over the next 4 weeks.

Arcadia city wants ban on single-use plastic bags just 6 months before a statewide referendum goes to California voters. If adopted, it would affect approximately 36 Arcadia businesses and be implemented in two phases. Phase 1 would begin in early June and would apply to grocery stores with $2 million+ in annual sales, such as Vons, Albertsons, 99 Ranch Market. An overnight break-in occurred at Burlington Coat Factory in Arcadia, at 1201 S. Baldwin Avenue. Employee found a jewelry display case had been smashed open. Arcadia police searched the store but no suspect was found. It was not clear what, if anything, had been stolen, other than the jewelry from the case.

Trouble at Santa Anita Park. According to figures taken from Equibase, Santa Anita Park's total handle was down $77.1 million, or 17.7% from a year ago. If the current trend continues, the track's all-sources handle could show a decline of more than $100 million for the 2010-2011 meet. George Haines, the president of Santa Anita Park, has other troubles, including some wet weather, a players' boycott, and the inconsistencies of a new dirt racing surface.
