Many of the local Chinese community, including members of the Arcadia Chinese Association, said they support the city council's decision to keep an ordinance requiring 2/3 of any business sign to be written in Roman letters.
Arcadia City officials plan to update the city's sign ordinance to prohibit certain types of signs, but merchants are concerned the proposed rules will hurt their business or be expensive.
Los Angeles Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich announced that the Board of Supervisors has appointed Arcadia resident Daisy L. Ma to the Los Angeles County Commission for Children and Families. The Arcadia City Council has rejected the Asian Pacific American Legal Center's request that the city revoke a rule limiting the amount of space foreign languages can occupy on business signs. Councilman Robert Harbicht noted that the ordinance has been on the books for several years and the city has not received a single complaint about it.

Officials confirmed that a body found beneath a freeway overpass is David Henry Richter, a retired Pasadena police lieutenant missing since last year. He was 55 and an Arcadia resident. The official cause of death is pending.
Monrovia man Gerardo Cortez, 26, was arrested for allegedly making telephone threats to shoot adults and children with an assault rifle at schools (including Arcadia High School), the Westfield Santa Anita mall, and a hospital in the San Gabriel Valley last week. He was booked at Monrovia Police Department for five counts of felony Making Criminal Threats and five counts of False Report of an Emergency. He is to be arraigned today. Teacher Brandon Michael Landreth, 30, of Pasadena, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Pasadena Superior Court. He allegedly confessed to his ex-wife that he shot 25-year old Justo Cesar Morales to death at his parents' Canyon Road home in Northern Arcadia.

The decomposed body of a missing Pasadena police lieutenant named David Henry Richter, 55, of Arcadia, was found under an overpass where the 605 freeway crosses Rivergrade Road. The cause of death has not been determined but it may have been suicide.
