After the County spent $410,000 over two years to renovate three of the four bowling greens at Santa Anita Lawn Bowling Club, some members are angry that the greens won't be playable for as long as two more years.

An application for state funds to make $8.5 million worth of repairs in 6 Arcadia schools is moving ahead. Funds for the repairs, from the Leroy F. Greene State School Building Lease-Purchase Program, a bond measure, have been exhausted. However, another bond issue, coming up in the June 1990 election, is expected to pass and provide money to continue the program.
An armed robbery Wednesday led to an all-night standoff with the police when the two suspects fled to an Arcadia home and held resident Pat Plumley hostage.
An episode of cable television channel AMC's show "Mad Men," that was filmed on location at Rod's Grill on Huntington Drive in Arcadia, last October, was shown this past week on the network. The episode is called "Far Away Places" and stars Jon Hamm as Don Draper, and Jessica Pare, as his wife. In this period drama, they are supposedly at a Howard Johnson's motor lodge (motel and restaurant).
An industrial fire at Altos Tire Company, on Longden Avenue, in Irwindale, near Monrovia and Arcadia, burned for more than 3 hours. Arcadia Fire Department and Monrovia Fire Department assisted. Arcadia firefighter Don Smith (photo) from Station 105, battles the fire atop one of the company's largest ladders.
Announced candidates for City Council as of January 13, 1974 are: Irvin I. Livingston; Thomas D. Ryan; David E. Parry. Seven others have also taken out papers. Three incumbents (Bob Arth, Ed Butterworth, and Don Hage) must retire.

The April apportionment of the cigarette tax, highway users tax and "in-lieu" motor vehicle license fee has been distributed. Arcadia received $15,988, $34,441 and $76,778 respectively.

Angels include Guy Gruppie, Sr., Manager Don McIntire, Coach Bon Meeks, Sean lee, Baily Shen, Will Meeks, Will Covey, Ryan Nguyen, Brandon Lustig, Nick Patton, Brandon Williams, Michael Gruppie, Michael Easter, Matt McIntyre (or McIntire), and Carter Jones.
Arcadia attorney, former mayor Jim Helms, receives "Business Icon" Award from Arcadia Chamber of Commerce CEO Scott Hettrick and Arcadia Historical Society President Gene Glasco for his dedicated work as an attorney since 1952. Jim is also a former Mayor of Arcadia (1971-1972), Arcadia Chamber President and Arcadia Citizen of the Year 1979 and 2004.
Arcadia Battalion Chief Don Shawver received a request to report for special duty at the Pentagon six hours after the first terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. He went to help as a safety officer.
The Arcadia Board of Education held its third student and staff recognition program, honoring members of the Arcadia Constitution Team, led by teacher Kevin Fox. Also honored were community volunteers Gary Kovacic, Bart Kimball, Bob Green, and Bob Garrett, the Science Olympiad Team, Allen Cheung for competing on the National Chemistry Olympiad Team, the Arcadia Science Bowl Team, Mathematics League, ROP, State Speech Association team, and Destination Imagination students.
Arcadia City Council appointed the following: Bob Hoherd to the Arcadia Beautiful Commission, Richard Cordano and Carmine Falabrino were reappointed. James Hanrahan was reappointed to the Human Resources Commission and John Fung to the library board. David Olsen will serve on the Planning Commission and on the relocations appeal board. Michael Cook and Randy Fowler were named to the Recreation Commission. Jim Lewis and Arlene Okamoto were reappointed to the Senior Citizen Commission, as were Carol Curtis, Harlene Hamann and Dick Milefchik.
