Arcadia's City Council was unable to elect a Mayor at Tuesday's Council meeting, with 5 members splitting their votes 3 ways. Several council members are interviewed.
The Arcadia Unified School District Board of Education backed the idea of a resolution calling for an immediate halt to aerial spraying of malathion. The board's actions came less than a week after the Arcadia City Council unanimously passed a resolution asking for a halt to the spraying.
Though Arcadia's 1968 term limit rule forces council members to step down after two four-year terms, it allows them to come back two years later. Robert Harbicht is the latest former council member planning to make the two-year rebound.
In an informal, long-range planning session, City Council members made a new library and police station two of their top priorities. Last month, the council approves spending $55,000 to hire a consultant, to be chosen at the June 19th meeting, to draw up plans for a new library to replace the overcrowded library.
The City Council called for federal legislation restricting the flow and existence of illegal aliens. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors had sent a request to area cities urging them to adopt a resolution supporting the proposed legislation.
The city budget passed unanimously on Tuesday night and included the elimination of 9 full-time employee positions, an increase in paramedics fees and a one-year, 1 percent utility tax increase.
