Susan Robertson, 48, a 4th grade teacher at Hugo Reid School for 26 years, died on July 4 after an 11-year battle with cancer. Mrs. Robertson graduated from USC in 1963 and worked for the Arcadia Unified School District, teaching at Hugo Reid School for her entire career.
The Arcadia Council PTA in cooperation with Parent Alert has organized evening programs for parents of all 5th and 6th grade, junior and senior high school students. The programs are designed to offer education on drug abuse.
First Avenue Junior High, severely damaged by a fire in 1979, will reopen this fall to students in grades 7-9 although reconstruction of the building is incomplete. Portable classrooms will be used.
The State Department of Education has announced that Dana Junior High and Foothills Junior High have been nominated as Distinguished Schools in the 1987-88 California School Recognition Program.
Arthur Farr, 46, the band and orchestra leader at Dana Junior High School, has been named the Arcadia Unified School District's 1990 Teacher of the Year. Farr has been teaching band and orchestra at Dana for 23 years, as well as coaching the basketball team and teaching physical education. Louis Pappas, First Avenue Junior High School history teacher, has been appointed assistant principal at Foothills Junior High School. Pappas will succeed Dr. Donald Smith who is retiring January 28.
Arcadia schools fared very will on the Performance Report for California schools, grade 8, according to a report received by the Arcadia Board of Education. All 3 Arcadia junior high schools meet or exceed all statewide targets.
