A history of the Van de Kamp's windmill atop the Denny's Restaurant currently at the northeast corner of Santa Anita Avenue and Huntington Drive. The Arcadia windmill was built nearly 40 years ago as part of an architectural movement called programmatic architecture, or roadside vernacular, wherein the buildings reflected their tenants. Arcadia City Council unanimously approved a plan to let the city of El Monte annex 5.19 acres of vacant land near Durfee Avenue and Clark Street. The plan is to have 34 units of homes developed there. Next, the matter goes to Los Angeles County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO).
Arcadia-based J. Foley Enterprises, owner of Clearman's Village shopping center at Huntington Drive and Rosemead Boulevard, has proposed building a Kohl's Department Store and refurbishing the Galley Restaurant (The Boat). Residents have complained to the County Planning Commission about the potential blocked view of the San Gabriel Mountains and increased traffic.
American Senior Living broke ground yesterday on the 54-unit Heritage Park, an affordable senior citizen housing project at 150 Las Tunas Drive. Rent for one-bedroom units is $484, and for doubles, the rent is $708.
The Arcadia Redevelopment Agency is apparently making some progress in a project to improve the area around the Rusnak Mercedes-Benz dealership. The project, known as the Morlan Place Center, has been the topic of closed-door discussions with property owners around the Huntington Drive site. The city has extended offers to at least two property owners to move to 620 E. Live Oak, so that Morlan Place Center can be developed.
Residents and business owners are upset and question tree removal in the city parking lot north of Huntington Drive, east of Santa Anita Avenue, commonly called the Post Office lot. Arcadia Development Services removed over one dozen trees that were damaging pavement and irrigation systems.
The Arcadia Police Department has moved to a new police station building at 250 W. Huntington Drive, Arcadia, CA, 91007, that is 42,000 square feet and cost $16 million. The official opening ceremony will be October 3, 2003. The old building that was built around 1956 will be demolished in a few weeks. Pioneer of the Nile (the horse) won the Santa Anita Derby this year and will go on to run the Kentucky Derby. Bob Baffert is the trainer and Garrett Gomez is the jockey.
Although The Pamplemousse and Pioneer of the Nile are favored to win the Santa Anita Derby, a third choice, Chocolate Candy, could cause an upset. Chocolate Candy is the son of Candy Ride. Chocolate Candy is owned by Jenny Craig and trained by Jerry Hollendorfer.
25-year-old entrepreneurs Dustin Nicolarsen and Michael Thomas co-own The Derby, the historic Arcadia steakhouse. The two give back to their community by hosting a fundraiser to benefit their high school.
An upscale senior citizens' residential community has been proposed on the site of Santa Anita Inn. The project is called Huntington Pointe and will include 260 units. It would be owned by Huntington Partnership and E.D.I., which owns and operates Santa Anita Inn.
Favored horse Sweet Catomine loses the Santa Anita Derby to Buzzards Bay making Buzzards' trainer Jeff Mullins the first trainer to earn three consecutive wins in the Santa Anita Derby.
A September grand opening is tentatively planned for Heritage Park Arcadia, a 54-unit development at 150 W. Las Tunas Drive. It provides housing for low income seniors and meets the special needs of elderly.
Work on building the Arcadia Heritage senior housing project on Live Oak Avenue will probably begin at the end of August. It will be 54 units of low-income senior housing and is being developed by American Senior Living.
