The City Council was embarrassed to learn that the reservoirs at Orange Grove and Baldwin, where it was thought that tennis courts could be added for nominal costs due to an earlier reinforcing of the reservoir surfaces, will not support such a project. No tennis courts will be added.
A new RTD line (119) has been instituted between Arcadia and Pasadena. It covers the area from Lincoln Ave. to Washington Blvd., Altadena Ave. to Orange Grove, out to Baldwin and terminating at Fashion Park. Buses leave every 30 minutes on weekdays.
At the urging of Temple City mayor Lou Gilbertson, State Senator Richardson has set aside his bill SB 1287. It would have reduced petition requirements from the present 25% to just 10% of the registered voters. They want Governor Brown to appoint an Ad Hoc committee to study the whole picture.
Arcadia City Council must decide how to pay the Metropolitan Water District taxes for 1979-80. Currently the city pays 50% and the property owners pay 50%.
The first reading of a water conservation ordinance was undertaken at the City Council meeting June 8. Five phases of the measure are given. Water rates will increase $.06 per 100 cubic feet as of August 1.
The committee assigned to make a feasibility study reports the possibility of Arcadia building an auditorium looks bleak and is getting bleaker. Efforts will continue to get major donations started via a grass roots drive and put these aside for a future project.
Three new laws have been recently passed by the City Council: 1. Noise - aimed primarily to curtail amplified sound. 2. Garage sales - must be held in a rear yard and be able to establish title to the goods. No signs may be placed on public property.
3. smoking - banned in theaters, etc.
Plans for a $700,000 building to house the City Council have been approved, but the whole project has bogged down over the projected $89,500 needed to make the existing City Hall conform to the new building. Complete details on rearranging city departments in order to make the best use of space are given.
The Otto Winkler home, built in the early 1920's at the corner of Fairview and Baldwin, has been demolished. The history of the era and that of West Arcadia are also given.
Curtailment and changes in the Five Year Capital Improvements program as adopted by the City Council last week have drawn disapproval of some Arcadians.
Arcadia has received a domestic water permit from the State. In 1973 the California State Health Department inspected Arcadia's system along with 240 other systems in Los Angeles and Orange Counties and only 15 systems received permits.
The need for more volunteer aides is cited by District Librarian Mrs. Julie Dresdner. In the last three years, beginning at Camino Grove, library-media centers have been developed and are in operation at all nine elementary schools.
Public participation in City Council meetings has been set for the middle of the meeting. People may speak on agenda items as they occur up to a 5 minute time limit.
New principals have been named for three Arcadia elementary schools. Jim Gerhardt has been named to head Holly Avenue. Charles Jarboe requested a transfer from Highland Oaks and was assigned to Camino Grove. Mrs. Suzanne Burton will replace Mr. Jarboe at Highland Oaks.
