Henry Amparan and David "Casey" Jones are being hailed as local heroes for their quick thinking in using a ladder to lead three people to safety when a fire swept through a second-story apartment at the San Souci complex at 501 East Live Oak Ave.
Seven firefighters were injured in Arcadia house fire on White Oak Drive. The Arcadia Fire Department (AFD) required assistance from Monrovia, Sierra Madre, El Monte, and Los Angeles County. Six from AFD were treated at Arcadia Methodist Hospital. The seventh firefighter, from Sierra Madre Fire Department, remained hospitalized in stable condition at St. Luke's Hospital in Pasadena. The house sustained extensive loss. Nearby residents wondered if the AFD needed so much help from outside fire departments because of recent cuts to the AFD.
Frank Ferris, 68, is a well-known Arcadia interior designer who has been in the decorating business since 1947. His store, Frank Ferris Interiors, has been open for 35 years.
Paula Alexander, 48, was killed in a traffic accident in South Pasadena in a shuttle bus from the Los Angeles International (LAX) airport. She was returning from Spain after a vacation with her husband Stanley Alexander, an Arcadia physician.
