Santa Anita Park's 18th annual Derby Day 5K Walk & Run attracted a record 5,683 participants last Saturday. The 5K benefits several charities, including Pasadena-based Ability First, the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA), Arcadia High School Athletic Boosters Club, Arcadia Historical Museum, and Arcadia Explorer Scouts.
Last Tuesday's election showed that most of the San Gabriel Valley voted for Democrats--Governor-elect Jerry Brown and U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer. The majority of voters in Arcadia, Bradbury, Glendora, La Mirada, San Dimas and San Marino voted for the Republican candidates.
Hazel Williams, 96, of Arcadia, volunteers as coordinator of two outreach ministry projects she started at Arcadia Presbyterian Church--Operation Christmas Child and The Happy Big Box Program. The programs help needy children.
Race horse Majestic Harbor, ridden by jockey Tyler Baze, wins the $500,000 Gold Cup at Santa Anita Park yesterday. The Gold Cup was formerly known as the Hollywood Gold Cup when it was run at Hollywood Park race track.
