Arcadia Chamber of Commerce has named Alice Wang "Arcadia's Citizen of the Year" for 2012-2013. Alice has been a very active volunteer with Arcadia Public Library Foundation, Assistance League of Arcadia's Operation School Bell, Tzu Chi Foundation's MWLA, Arcadia Historical Museum, Arcadia Police Department, Arcadia Chinese Association and Foothill Unity Center.
San Gabriel Valley police officers and firefighters, including Arcadia Police Department and Arcadia Fire Department, competed in a charity basketball tournament at Arcadia High School to benefit Special Olympics Southern California. It was organized by Arcadia Police detective Walter Ashby.
Arcadia Poetry Slam, Sunday, April 8, will call attention to social issues, including poverty and homelessness. It will be held at Arcadia Performing Arts Center (APAC) and will benefit Foothill Unity.
The new Performing Arts Center at 234 Campus Drive, Arcadia will open next month. "An Evening with Anka," an exclusive benefit concert takes place October 27, 2012. The building is state-of-the-art, 40,000 square feet, and has 1,200 seats, on the Arcadia High School campus. There will be student performances the week prior to Paul Anka's concert.
Ruth and Charles Gilb Arcadia Historical Museum is currently exhibiting "Arcadia Fire Department: a history." It is the 7th annual Arcadia High School honors history exhibit. Arcadia High School Theatre Department won first place trophy in the High School Intermediate Category for its ensemble performance of "Oklahoma" at the Musical Theatre Competition of America. The ensemble award was accepted by Gabriel Rousset and Ariana Raygoza.
Santa Anita Park's Derby Day 5K race brings out over 5,500 runners, the largest turnout in the race's 20-year history. The 5K is a fundraiser, with approximately $10,000 raised for Arcadia Historical Museum, Arcadia High School and CARMA, an organization devoted to caring for retired horses.
California's median home price posted its biggest annual gain in more than 5 years last month, rising 20.8% to $301,790, as reported by California Association of Realtors. Arcadia has the second-largest increase in the state with its median home price jumping 40.2% in March to $726,136 compared to $518,000 a year earlier.
Official groundbreaking ceremony for the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage's Education Center will take place September 29. The 2600 square feet Center will include classrooms and lecture hall, on the site behind the Community Center and in front of the Museum.
Paul Anka to perform at the benefit and grand opening concert October 27, 2012 at the new $20 million, state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center, part of Arcadia Unified School District. High school musicians will accompany Paul Anka.
Arcadia Museum Education Center (MEC) was dedicated June 28, 2014. It was a 5-year project from concept to completion. It has long been a dream of Floretta Lauber, Arcadia's first female mayor, to build the MEC to fill a void in the museum's ability to bring in guest lecturers. The Museum Foundation was the founding sponsor and donated $500,000 to the City of Arcadia towards the cost of the building.
Los Angeles City Fire Captain Jack Fry, an Arcadia High School graduate, class of 1978, was named Training Officer of the Year by the Los Angeles Fire Commission.
