Two challengers and two incumbents in this month's school board election are vying for two seats. Mary Dougherty, David Leong, Joann Steinmeier and Annie Yuen are running in an election that could result in Arcadia's first-ever Asian school board member.
Due to a lack of interest in the two seats on the school board opening up in April, the election may be cancelled. If election is cancelled, the school board can appoint the people who have been nominated-Annie Yuen and Joanna Steinmeier, or appoint any eligible voter.
Steinmeier and Yuen are elected to School Board. Yuen is the first Asian-American elected to the board and this was the first full election conducted on computerized voting machines in LA County.
The school board election will take place on Tuesday. Two seats are available. Annie Yuen and David Leong are running against incumbents Mary Dougherty and Joann Steinmeier. Their positions on issues are stated.
Steinmeier and Yuen win seats on the school board. This was the first election to be conducted totally on touchscreen voting machines and results were available in 51 minutes.
Assemblywoman Carol Liu has garnered more local endorsements in her first bid for elective office before Arcadia voters. Gary Kovacic, Mickey Segal, Maryann Gibson, and Annie Yuen endorse Liu, who wants to get tough on child pornographers.
As part of the Centennial celebration, Gloria Horstman will review current books at the Arcadia Public Library. Horstman was an Arcadia school board member and served on the Library's Board of Trustees.
Asian immigrants are changing the face of San Gabriel Valley. Los Angeles County reports 1.3 million Asians, with many of them moving to Arcadia for jobs and schools.
9-year-old Maria Lugo came to Arcadia Arcadia Methodist Hospital from Mexico to have a steel plate removed from her chin. It was a follow-up surgery to a softball-size tumor removal she had in April, 2008, at Arcadia Methodist Hospital. Dr. Jon Tyrell, a member of LIGA International, and Dr. B.S. Chandrasekhar operated on her. LIGA International is a non-profit group of medical experts, pilots and volunteers who travel to clinics in Sinaloa, Mexico several times a year.
Technology might steal the election show today as local voters for the first time choose two school board members using computers rather than punch-card ballots.
Ambassador Jason C. Yuen, director general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, will be grand marshal of the 49th Festival of Bands Parade in Arcadia.
Christina Aragon, Assistant Superintendent of business services at Arcadia Unified School District, totaled her district car that she uses as a personal vehicle. It is part of her salary package. Arcadia School Board members and Superintendent Mimi Hennessy defended Aragon in media coverage.
