A plaque in honor of Officer Albert E. Matthies, the only Arcadia police officer killed in the line of duty, will be dedicated by the Police Department on July 9th. Attending will be Officer Matthies' two daughters, Minnie Matthies and Zora Kristufek.
As part of National Police Week, a memorial ceremony was held at the Episcopal Church of Transfiguration in memory of those officers killed in 1998 in the line of duty. A photo of Albert Edward Matthies, the only Arcadia police officer ever killed in the line of duty, was on the altar.
Gregory Ramos, 18, of Downey was discovered unconscious in a jail cell at the Arcadia City Jail. A routine jail check revealed that Ramos had used his jail linen to fashion a noose in an attempt to strangle himself.
Neighbors of 16 year old Russell Simon, killed in August while riding his bicycle home from football practice, are banding together to have a memorial plaque installed at the corner where the high school sophomore was struck by a truck.
An off duty Arcadia police officer (name withheld) killed an Altadena man, Anthony Denham, 22, as the officer and four others were being robbed by the man and several armed accomplices.

Joan Hallett, secretary to the City Librarian, died Tuesday at Huntington Memorial Hospital. She was struck by a car on Saturday and never regained consciousness. Joan had worked at the Arcadia Public Library nearly 40 years.
The body of Wenda Peter Liu was found lying in a hallway after police responded to a 911 call by one of his sons. The son, age 20, was arrested on suspicion of murder.
