The Arcadia chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for a site for a new building. One possibility is on county property, adjacent to the rose garden at Arcadia County Park.
The Juvenile Diversion Program, a Federally funded group of which Arcadia is a part, seeks to divert students who have been in minor problems from the courts and sent them to counseling and treatment. The program has come in for heavy criticism recently due to high administrative costs.
Arcadia has been officially approved by the American Revolutionary Bicentennial Committee as a Bicentennial city. Such approval is necessary before the city can participate in the many functions and activities of the ARBC.
Officials of local cities have sent off letters to Governor Jerry Brown and the State Department of Housing and Community Development protesting proposed changes in regulations. If enacted, local government would lose much of its autonomy in the planning of local housing.
In a letter to the Tribune, Chairman Charles Gilb says that the auditorium project is ready to move forward. A non-profit corporation has been set up and this will make donations tax-deductible. Some teachers began picketing in front of the district offices. At issue were charges of stalling on negotiations and the 1% increase offer by the School Board which the teachers called "an insult." Superintendent Ed Ryan said that if the two unions had been able to get together on their demands the problem might have been resolved by now.
Tabulation of returns from a planning survey questionnaire sent to every 4th home in Arcadia shows that crime prevention is the #1 priority of Arcadia citizens. Next in line was street lighting. About 700 of the mailed questionnaires have been returned.
Republic Development Company has sent letters to 39 owners of 59 parcels of land, offering to purchase property on Huntington Drive, east of Second Avenue. Article outlines proposals for redevelopment.
A small group of teachers, dissatisfied with an 8.5% salary increase, may go on strike. Both the Arcadia Teachers Association and the American Federation of Teachers local have disavowed the action.
Questionnaires have been sent to a sampling of citizens to get input on how the city should spend up to $1,000,000 under Title I of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974.
Ruling in favor of the city on Friday, June 8, Judge Richard Hayden said that the lawsuit filed by People's Advocate Inc. & the Arcadia Tax Reform Committee did not have facts sufficient for a legal action. The plaintiffs have 30 days to file and amended complaint.
The Arcadia Public Library has joined the Metropolitan Cooperative Library System. Library users will have access to MCLS libraries, SCAN (Southern California Answering Network at Los Angeles Public Library) and SCILL (Southern California Interlibrary Loan Network).
