Successful opener. Jockey sets stakes record on first day of Santa Anita Park meet. Jockey John Velazquez won both the Chandelier Stakes and the American Pharoah Stakes, riding Bast and Eight Rings, respectively. Both horses are trained by Bob Baffert.

Trainer Bob Baffert had a brush with death last year, but is healthy now and will participate in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic. Race horse Paynter (shown in photo with Baffert) will run the $5 million classic at Santa Anita Park.
Santa Anita Park attacks fatal toll through technology. It is the first race track to use the Mile-Pet scanner, developed by the veterinary medicine department at UC Davis. Its purpose is to find things inside a horse's legs and ankles that will cause a problem. It will not eliminate tragic outcomes on the race track but the hope is it will improve safety, keeping unfit horses in the barn and reduce the horse death toll.
Santa Anita Park and City of Hope are joining forces to raise money to fight cancer with the first "On Track to Beat Cancer" walk, this Sunday at the race track. It is a 1/4 fundraising walk. All proceeds raised will go toward City of Hope's Women's Cancer Program for research, treatment and education.
Trainer John Sadler, a 54-year old Long Beach native, watched from home with a knee injury, as his trainees Switch, Sidney's Candy, and Twirling Candy) win three stakes races on Santa Anita Park's opening day of the 2010-2011 season, its 74th racing season.

Santa Anita Park on Verge of new era. New Santa Anita Park Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mark Verge will re-institute its "Free Fridays" promotion. Starting this Friday and every Friday for the rest of the meet, all fans will be given free grandstand admission and the price for hot dogs, sodas and beer will be cut to $2. Previous CEO Greg Avioli resigned earlier this month.
