Elbert E. Souders, associate superintendent of schools, has been appointed interim superintendent by the Board of Education. In accepting the two-year appointment, Souders will be replacing Edward V. Ryan who resigned to accept a position at USC.
Enrollment in Arcadia schools, for the 8th school month declined compared to the same month last year. Enrollment overall, slipped from 7,553 to 7,419.
Arcadia High School seniors earned $40,403 for their district because they improved their scores on the statewide California Assessment Program. The money was awarded by the state under the Education Improvement Program.
The Arcadia Redevelopment Agency won a $495,000 settlement for removing toxic waste from 1.6 acres of downtown Arcadia land it bought from Clifford C. Bong and Co. last year. The agency sued Bong in April of 1988 to recover the money it spent to dispose of soil contaminated with high levels of lead, cadmium and hydrocarbon wastes. The agreement was reached two days before the June 27 trial was to begin.
Tennyson Warren, Foothills Junior High School English teacher, has spent 6 weeks studying Indian literature and will bring this enriched background to his students.
Improvements at the county operated Peck Road Fishing and Conservation area, located between Arcadia and El Monte, are scheduled to be completed in 10 months. Most of the funds will come from a state grant.
