Area librarians agree that recessionary periods create a greater demand for library services. It is ironic that this comes at a time when libraries are hurting from budget cuts. Arcadia and Monrovia have suffered most in this regard, cutting down on personnel and new book purchases and, in Arcadia's case, closing it's audio-visual department and reducing hours.
Due to Los Angeles County budget cuts which will take a $154,465 bite out of the outpatient center's funding the Arcadia Mental Health Center will be losing five therapists who have been seeing 450 to 500 patients a year and keeping them out of hospitals and institutions.

Edie O'Hair is in charge of the battle against overdue books at the Arcadia Library. Approximately 1,500 overdue notices are logged each month with a grand total of about 5,000 missing books.
A series of spending cuts totaling nearly $190,000 have been approved by the Board of Education in an effort to balance the School district's $28 million 1988-89 budget.
Dr. John Nelson, assistant superintendent for business in the Arcadia schools, believes the $20 million budget the Board of Education adopted is relatively stable. Incorporated are present estimates for all income as well as corresponding expenditures for the 1983-84 school year.

There have been six attempted rapes reported at Arcadia High School since April 15, 1979. At least five are believed to have been committed by the same individual.
