Arcadia Police Department has received a grant of $142,286 to set up a trial traffic safety program. It is enough to purchase one extra car and pay the salaries of three policemen who have indicated an interest. The goal is to reduce personal injury and fatal traffic collisions by 3% each year.
The Arcadia City Council reaffirmed its decision to barricade Hillcrest Blvd. near Valencia Way. The reasoning is that motorists would then be forced to disperse traffic rather than concentrate usage on one street.
Arcadia is one of 4 cities in Los Angeles County to receive funds from the Solid Waste Management Board to clean up litter and enforce anti-litter laws. The $7,954 will help rebuild a street sweeper.
A new regional federally funded program, called NERBIT (Northeast Regional Burglary Investigative Team) went into operation July 1, 1975. While Arcadia is not a participant due to a man-power shortage, Police Chief Martin expects spin-off benefits to accrue to the city.
Residents in the Santa Anita Oaks area should receive some relief from the current traffic problems. Instead of barricading the streets as originally suggested, islands will be constructed to restrict some of the traffic.
Mayor Bob Margett, in a speech to the Chamber of Commerce, suggested that the city start checking up on businesses operating out of homes within the city.
January 12 was the first day that candidates for City Council could take out nomination papers. Those doing so were incumbents Charles Gilb and Jack Saelid. Don Pellegrino of Pellegrino's Restaurant has indicated that he will also file. Others are also considering running.
