A confrontation between the Board of Directors of the Juvenile Diversion Program and Ron Weber, Executive Director of the Regional Office of Criminal Justice Planning, has resulted in a renegotiation of the start for this project. Meant to provide counseling services to youths of seven area cities, it was delayed in opening, and the Board of Directors wants and extension on their funds and contract to prove themselves.
The Board of H.O.Y. has decided to close the Temple City branch counseling offices July 1, 1977 due to a lack of funds. The Temple City Council failed to appropriate the $5000 needed to deep the facility open.
The Methodist Hospital has inaugurated a three months seminary internship under Chaplain Paul Johenk. The purpose is to teach methods of hospital calling and pastoral counseling with patients and families going through a medical crisis.
The Arcadia Unified School District is planning an ambitious expansion of its academic programs in 1974. Career guidance, library resources centers and reading programs will be emphasized.
The San Gabriel Valley Juvenile Diversion Program has been established to divert local youths from the criminal justice system to local counseling agencies. Arcadia is participating in this program along with Temple City, Alhambra, Monterey Park, Rosemead and San Gabriel.
A U.S. government depository is now being readied for Arcadians. A representative collection appropriate for this community will be selected out of the approximately 22,000 items available.
A child care center will open September 15, 1975 at the Arcadia Presbyterian Church for all children. It is not geared toward working parents, but it is a special supplemental program to expand a child's experiences.
Arcadia High School teacher Thomas Payne is lending his full support to the California Youth Theater. It is the goal of this group to create an educated audience for theater in California.
Fourteen-year-old Ron Cheney earned $1,000 for the Arcadia Presbyterian Church's youth fund by eating chicken. In a contest sponsored by the Market Basket food chain, Ron ate 1.28 pounds of chicken in 10 minutes.
The Arcadia Senior Citizens Commission has received permission for the City Council to apply $45,000 in Federal Funds for counseling, legal aid, transportation, etc.
As of July 1, the City of Arcadia was awarded $31,750 in federal grant funds under the Older Americans Act, Title III. Funds will be used to provide I & R, outreach and volunteer services for older residents of Arcadia and Temple City.
The City Council will hold a meeting on January 29 to provide citizens with information on the city's proposed participation in the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974.
