The School Board reversed an earlier decision to order construction of two modular buildings at Holly Avenue School to permit the transfer there of 150 students from Hugo Reid, thus emptying one classroom there for future growth. It may not be possible at this late date to get the necessary work done by September 15.
Two ad hoc committees have been established to help the Board of Education make a final ruling on two major problems: Smoking (recent legislation has made smoking on campus legal at the discretion of the local school board) and Graduation requirements.
The possibility of a fee for admission to both the Arboretum and Descanso Gardens is being considered by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. At a hearing, Hal Roach, a member of the Board of Governors expressed the hope that the Supervisors would not resort to charging a fee. The fee would NOT be used to keep up the Arboretum, but would go into the County General Fund.
The Arcadia Board of Education will be asked to approve criteria determining if segregation exists in local schools. A public hearing will then be held, and a report submitted to the State Dept. of Education.
The Arcadia Teachers' Association and the Arcadia School Board have tentatively agreed to resolve unfair labor practices complaints following an informal hearing at the Los Angeles office of the Public Employees Relations Board.
Planning Commission members and Planning Director Bill Woolard were bitterly disappointed at the slim turn-out of residents at a recent and much publicized hearing to review zoning in the city's central area.
The City Council denied, for the present, an application for a religious solicitation permit by the Society for Krishna Consciousness. Public hearings on the matter will be continued to January 2, 1979.
Beginning October 1, Arcadians will pay more for their water. The increase will be in two steps. The first will be an increase of 6% per 100 cubic feet. The second will be dependent on possible increases in the Edison rates for pumping.
The Hugo Reid Drive closure will have its final determination April 14. At present it is a one-way street as a result of fatal accidents some years back.
Public hearing on Anoakia-area zone change allows citizen input. Hearing is on a Planning Commission resolution recommending approval of a zone change from R-0 30,000 to R-0 30,000 and D for the Anoakia area. This means that residential lots must contain at least 30,000 square feet. The D stands for "design overlay," which gives the property owners' association an opportunity to review architectural plans for development.
Public hearings will be held in re proposed residential development north of Foothills Junior High School. The first hearing will discuss only the environmental impact report.
The preliminary 1978-79 Arcadia School District budget has been approved. Public hearings will be held in September prior to the passage of the final budget.
The School Board has begun discussions on a proposed tax increase election to cope with galloping inflation. The Board hopes to hold the election on April 15, 1975 in conjunction with the election for Board members.
A public hearing to air teachers' contract proposals was well attended by an angry public. Some expressed the view that teachers were out to get everything they can.
