Marquee West use permit: new hurdle. Operators of the Marquee West teenage night club at 30 S. First Avenue will face a new hurdle when Planning Commission will reconsider the conditional use permit under which the center operates. The staff recommendation will be to revoke the permit, "due to the inability to control irresponsible behavior and the apparent inability of Marquee West to comply fully with all the conditions of the permit." Trouble continues for a teen music "night club" that opened in December 1977 on First Avenue. Noise, trash, and parking have been problems. Now it is restroom facilities and fire regulations.
City Council heard testimony on problems connected with opening of Marquee West - a club opened recently to bring musical groups to Arcadia - and aim at the younger people in the community. Paul Fry, spokesman for Marquee West, promised to police the operation more heavily. The club will be open Thursday through Saturday.
Marquee West was given a 30 day extension on its permit to operate. Joe Ramsey, one of the operators, said they are checking on a possible new location.
Approval was given by the Planning Commission to a group which wants to open Marquee West in the former bowling alley on Morlan Place. The owners plan to bring various musical groups to the facility. There will be no drugs or liquor allowed.
The City Council voted on March 1, 1977 to uphold the 30,000 square foot minimum lot size set by the Planning Commission on any development Mr. McCaslin might build. Room for compromise seems possible.
The Planning Commission directed the planning staff to prepare a resolution permitting Maranatha High School to operate at its present North Santa Anita location.
Robert Considine, Pasadena City College trustee from the Arcadia district will not seek another term. December 9 is the first day to file for the March 8, 1977 election. January 1 is the deadline for filing.
Opposing forces are preparing for the March 1 City Council meeting. At this time the Council will decide whether to permit Mr. McCaslin to develop the area in lots of 18,000 to 20,000 square feet and keep the mansion, or to hold him to the 30,000 square feet set by the Planning Commission and risk losing the house built by Anita Baldwin.
The Planning Commission has rejected proposed General Plan changes that would have permitted hi-density zoning in the Naomi-Camino Real-Golden West area and left it medium density. The General Plan and the zoning map are still not in conformity, which was one reason the hearing was called.
Gifford P. Eastwood died unexpectedly on June 14, 1977. He had been associated with the Los Angeles Turf Club since 1946 and owned Arcadia Stationary on North First.
Ground was broken on March 28, 1976 for the new City Council Chambers addition to City Hall. It will be a completely separate building to the west of the present structure.
The Planning Commission is endeavoring to make Arcadia's General Plan more flexible and more consistent with zoning regulations. The Commission will submit its changes to the City Council for final approval.
Arcadia teachers picketed the open house at Arcadia High School to protest the 1978-79 raise offered by the Arcadia Board of Education. The teachers claim they received a 3.5% salary adjustment (vs. the average San Gabriel Valley increase of 5.5%) while the Board claims a 5% increase retroactive to December 1, 1978.
