A group of eight intends to roller skate from Arcadia to Las Vegas and back again, a trip which should set a speed and endurance record and earn a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. The marathon, under the leadership of Ed Schriener, hopes to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Arcadia High School's Marching Band, Tall Flags, and Tom Tom Drill Team took the Sweepstakes Award for street competition at the Mt. Carmel Invitational Tournament of Bands, October 24.

Clyde Condon, Arcadia clinical psychologist, was recently named the 1989 Psychologist of the Year by Division 31 of the American Psychological Association. For the past 3 years, Condon has practiced at Arcadia Counseling and Psychiatric Associates, where about 1/3 of his patients are children.
Despite the protests of relatives and friends of the victims, 21 year old Arcadian Jim Bates will face only misdemeanor charges for the freeway deaths of two people. Bates drove across three traffic lanes in an attempt to make the Baldwin Avenue offramp of the Foothill Freeway. The accident happened on April 16, 1982.
The Arcadia High School Apache Marching Band won the Sweepstakes Award at the annual state championship All-Western Band Review for the third consecutive year which earns them the perpetual trophy. This makes the third time they have won the perpetual trophy which goes to a school that has won the Sweepstakes Award three times in a row. This is a "first" in the All-Western Band Review.
A flag identifying Foothills Junior High as a distinguished secondary school for 1987-88 is now in place below Old Glory on the flagpole in front of the school.
An emergency ordinance opens the sale of fireworks to other groups besides the American Legion which has had the only permit for many years. Council said it acted to avoid charges of permitting a monopoly.
A 21-year-old woman was the third person raped at gunpoint this year, and police suspect that they may be by the same person. All three women were accosted by an African American man in his 20's or 30's wearing a black cap. They were accosted in the early morning with a gun while alone in their cars.

The Arcadia Post 247 American Legion members will be leaving their home of 69 years to move to a new meeting place sometime in the next few months. Faced with dwindling funds to finance much-needed repairs for their 2-story hall, the group has sold their property to a development firm that wants to build 40 homes in the area.
More than a mascot. Schools: When a Native American group urged Arcadia High to stop using the Apache as a symbol, officials made it an educational issue to be studied--and decided by--the Student Council. Members of the Arcadia High School Student Council are scheduled today to recommend whether to keep their school mascot, the Apache warrior which has been used for 45 years.
The school board has begun studying the proposed $17.4 million budget. It does not include salary increases. The budget includes all eight elementary schools. Depending on the election, two schools may be closed.
