The Arcadia Council PTA in cooperation with Parent Alert has organized evening programs for parents of all 5th and 6th grade, junior and senior high school students. The programs are designed to offer education on drug abuse.
The Police Department's Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program narrowly escaped elimination at the previous Council funding. The program is under renewed scrutiny.
Parent Alert has developed an educational drug program for 5th and 6th grade students. Titled "It's Your Decision," it teaches youngsters some of the important facts about drug abuse. The one-hour program took 2 years to develop. It is now ready for any teacher desirous of this service by calling Parent Alert at 446-3860.
The Arcadia City Council & School Board members have decided to cooperate on an anti-drug crusade involving the possible resumption of the "cop on campus" program at the Junior high schools and declaring October as drug abuse awareness month.
Arcadia Chief of Police, Neal Johnson, has been appointed chairman of an anti-drug program sponsored by the San Gabriel Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
The Arcadia Police Dept. will receive $1,227,823 of a total of $12 million for its part in the largest drug bust in history at a Sylmar warehouse last September. The Arcadia School Board accepted $26,365 in state funding to prevent alcohol and drug use among elementary school students. The money, available on 1/0/90, is being allocated under the Comprehensive Alcohol and Drug Prevention Education Program (CADPE), targeting 4th, 5th, and 6th graders in every district in California.

An Arcadia undercover police officer, 28, helped a Drug Enforcement Administration team and the LAPD in Sylmar for the biggest drug bust in history, a cache of 20 tons of cocaine valued at $20 billion. Federal agents also confiscated $10 million in cash.
